Buying guide: Cables & Linkage

This range covers Kia, Mazda, Nissan and Volvo applications.

A cable is a wear item even though nothing about it looks like one. The inner strand frets against the liner, the liner absorbs dirt, and the effort needed to move the cable climbs until the lever feels stiff or the mechanism stops returning fully. Linkage rods wear at the ball sockets in the same way, which shows up as play rather than stiffness.

Symptoms worth acting on: a parking brake that will not hold on a slope, a shifter that needs a wiggle to find a gear, a hood release that needs two pulls, or a heater flap that clicks but does not move. Adjustment can only take up so much slack; once the cable has stretched or the liner is worn, it needs replacing.

Every listing gives the years, engine and drivetrain the cable or linkage was catalogued for, plus the OEM part number. Check the length and the end fitting type against the original, since two cables for the same model can differ by body style.
